Flowers to Name Day
Find out when your family and friends have their name day.
The name day is in many regions of the world a very important date. In some catholic areas the name day has more weight as birthdays. Normally the name day falls on the day of a saint or martyr death which is then named after them. If more then one saint or martyr has a name day on the same day, then the day goes to the highest ranking saint or martyr.
The name day has been celebrated since the middle ages in many catholic and orthodox countries. The church required the celebration of the name day as the church regarded birthdays to be part of pagan rituals. Children were normally baptised one day after their birth and thus received the name of the saint that had name day on that particular day. The child was thus taken into spiritual custody by the saint of martyr that provided the name we the dictum "nomen est omen".
